Kestner-Gesellschaft ephemera : from the library of Justus Bier.

The material was collected by Justus Bier during his time as Director of the Kestner-Gesellschaft. The Gesellschaft was founded in 1916 in Hannover with the goal of bringing to Hannover important contemporary art. It was closed by the Nazis in 1936 following an exhibit by Bier, a Jew, featuring artists banned by the Nazis. The Kestner-Gesellschaft reopened in 1948.

Justus Bier was born in Nuremberg in 1899 and died in 1990 in Raleigh, North Carolina. He was an art historian and the director of the Kestner-Gesellschaft in Hannover between 1930 and 1937.
